Reading is a wonderful way to escape life, but it can also be very profound. One of the most powerful things I have ever read is The Brothers Karamazov, by Fyodor Dostoyevsky. It's very long, but you have to read it. I have to admit that I was not very impressed with the beginning.
However, after 20 pages or so I was hooked. It's mostly about three brothers, all suffering from some sort of madness, who come into conflict with one another and with society at large. You really feel for these characters as they become more and more desperate to make sense of their suffering.
And you are shocked when the story ends and you realize that the suffering has continued for hundreds of years.
